SPOT REMOVAL GUIDELINES
Where the listed web-sites suggest dry-cleaning solvent or citrus
solutions we recommend: Rubbing alcohol, which is cheaper, easier
to find (drug-store) & safer than solvent.
First: Try these tips, gleaned from several Carpet manufacturer's
brochures, they usually work and will do no harm if carefully
followed..
They will work for most, but not all, common household
spots & stains. They will not work for most dyes, pigments, paint,
bleach or non-food or beverage substances.
Act quickly; the difference between a spot and a stain is about
5 days.
Having suitable towels placed under the seat cushions of your
furniture will allow for quick action when spills occur. Before
using any spot removers, try these methods, which use absorption
and time for the most simple and effective solution we know of.
1/ For spots that re-appear the day after cleaning or
are known to be water-based like: cold drinks, foods, ketchup,
salsa, jam, coffee, blood or pet stains, try the following:
If still wet, blot out with paper towels. Then put white cotton
terry toweling over spot and weigh down with heavy flat object
(books) for 8 hours. If spot is dry when discovered, re-wet by
spraying (not soaking) with cold, pure, White Vinegar. Cover with
terry towels and weight then wait for 8 hours. If spot can still
be seen in both carpet and towel, repeat the above process. If
there is no change try #2: Some stains are both water and oil
based.
2/ If cause of spot is unknown or is known to be oil-based
(gravy, cream, crayon, make-up, ice cream, salad-dressing, hand
or hair lotion etc) then: Apply a small amount of rubbing alcohol
to a clean white towel and gently blot and dab at
the spot with the towel ( do not rub, scrub or git mad at the
spot). If there is colour transfer to the towel then repeat
with more alcohol on a fresh part of the towel 'til the spot is
gone. Do not apply alcohol directly to carpet as it may
damage backing glue of the carpet.
